server.properties FAQ
What is the server.properties file?
It's the main config file for a vanilla or modded Minecraft Java server. It sets the game mode, difficulty, player limit, view distance, MOTD and dozens of other options the server reads on startup.
Where do I put server.properties?
In the root of your server folder, next to the server jar. Edit it while the server is stopped, then start the server so it reads the new values. On CoalHost you don't touch the file — the panel writes and reloads it for you.
Which settings affect server RAM and lag?
View distance and simulation distance are the big ones — every extra chunk of view/sim distance loads more of the world into memory and ticks more entities. Dropping them from 12 to 8 is one of the cheapest ways to steady a laggy server.
What does online-mode do?
With online-mode=true the server verifies each player's account with Mojang, which is the safe default. Turning it off allows cracked/offline clients but also lets anyone join under any username, so only do it on a private, whitelisted or proxied setup.
