The Merciless Void Server Hosting

✓ Verified on a real dedicated server · 2026-05-22MC 1.20.1forge

Most “does this modpack work on a server” answers are guesses. This one isn't: we install The Merciless Void on a fresh cloud VM, boot it, and connect to it before we let anyone pay for it. What you see below is the result of those tests — including the fixes our install pipeline applies automatically so your first boot doesn't hit the crashes we already found.

What we fix before your first boot

These come from real failed boots — each one crashed a test server until we found the fix. Every new The Merciless Void server gets them applied automatically during install.

  • Essential_* — disabled on the server

Essential is a client-side social/cosmetic overlay (gg.essential). Its EssentialTransformationService loads `org.apache.commons.codec.digest.DigestUtils` which is absent on dedicated server, FATAL ClassNotFoundException during boot (verified 2026-05-22).

  • fancymenu_* — disabled on the server

FancyMenu rewrites Minecraft's title/menu Screen classes — net.minecraft.client.gui.screens.Screen is NOT in DEDICATED_SERVER dist, so RuntimeDistCleaner aborts boot (verified 2026-05-22).

  • melody_* — disabled on the server

FancyMenu dependency, useless without FancyMenu (verified 2026-05-22).

  • Controlling-* — disabled on the server

Keybinding-conflict UI mod — touches client KeyMapping which doesn't exist server-side.

  • entitytexturefeatures* — disabled on the server

ETF client-side entity texture remapper — mixes into ResourceLocation with a handler that calls `net.minecraft.client.gui.screens.Screen`, FATAL on dedicated server (verified 2026-05-22 stack trace at `handler$zhh000$etf$illegalPathOverride`).

  • configured-* — disabled on the server

    In-game config-UI mod, client-only.

  • embeddium* — disabled on the server

Vanilla rendering optimisation (client-only fork of Sodium for Forge).

  • oculus-* — disabled on the server

    Shader loader, client-only.

  • sodium* — disabled on the server

    Sodium / Embeddium addons (extras, dynamic-lights, options-api) — all client-only renderer extensions.

  • sound-physics-remastered* — disabled on the server

3D sound rendering (echo, occlusion). Client-only.

Plus 3 server.properties pins, 1 known log pattern our crash-analyzer recognises.

Common questions

How much RAM does a The Merciless Void server need?

Our boot tests put the floor at 12 GB of container RAM. The signup flow auto-sizes to this — you can't accidentally under-provision.

Does The Merciless Void work on a dedicated server?

Yes — verified on 2026-05-22 on a fresh cloud VM: installed, booted and accepted Minecraft connections end-to-end.

What happens if it crashes anyway?

Every server gets automated backups plus a crash-analyzer that reads the actual log, matches it against known modpack failures and either applies the fix or restores the backup.
