RLCraft Server Keeps Crashing? The 3 First-Boot Killers — and How to Fix Each

RLCraft has a reputation problem, and it's not the game. Between the dragons, the thirst mechanic and the level-5 zombie that ends your run in the first ten minutes, it's exactly the Halloween pack people want. The problem is every first boot — and the ghost story that comes after: “installed it, crashed, reinstalled, crashed, host says fine, friends left.”

We've boot-tested RLCraft (Forge 1.12.2, measured floor 8 GB on our public benchmark table) and sat through a lot of first-boot crashes — our own and customers'. Three things kill RLCraft-class packs, and none of them is “the server is broken.” Here's each one, how to identify it from the log, and what actually fixes it.

1

Your host's boot timeout is shorter than the pack's first world generation

Symptom

No crash report at all. The install finishes, the server starts generating the overworld — and the dashboard flips to "failed", sometimes restarting the install on its own. You never see a Java exception, because the host killed a healthy process.

Cause

RLCraft's first world generation routinely takes 6+ minutes. Hosts that declare a boot "failed" at 5 minutes fixed a timeout sized for average packs and broke the slowest tier of packs.

Fix
Pick a host (or run a box yourself) whose boot check can wait longer than 10 minutes. Our panel restart honours RLCraft's slow load instead of timing out at a fixed 60 s. If you're stuck with your current host for tonight: reduce the pack's view-distance in server.properties before first launch — it shortens (but doesn't eliminate) the first boot. Raise it back after startup, never mid-boot.
2

Missing JVM module args on newer Java

Symptom

An `InaccessibleObjectException` or `IllegalAccessError` early in the boot, long before any world-generation question.

Cause

Modern JVMs module-lock JDK internals. A handful of 1.12-Forge-era mods deep in RLCraft's stack reach into internals that Java 17+ won't allow without explicit `--add-opens` arguments.

Fix
Add the pack's known --add-opens line to your JVM arguments before the first boot. The RLCraft hosting page reads “Java 8 vs 17 handled automatically” — that's part of why the pack boots clean in our table. If your panel doesn't let you add JVM args, ask your host for them; this is a two-minute change.
3

A datapack feature-order cycle

Symptom

The server boots, players load in, then ~90 seconds in the JVM hard-crashes with `Feature order cycle found, involved sources: [...]` — a crash every time, after every restart.

Cause

Two biome-modifier datapacks inject features into the same biomes in conflicting orders. Java's feature sorter detects a cycle and refuses to start chunk generation. This is the nastiest of the three because it's nobody's config being "wrong": the two datapacks are individually valid.

Fix
Remove one of the two conflicting datapacks (the log names the sources). You rarely need both — pick the one that contributed the biome content you actually play with. If you didn't install datapacks yourself, one may have shipped with a global pack config; check global_packs/.

Uninstall-reinstall never fixes any of these

The cycle people get stuck in: crash → “probably a bad install” → reinstall → same crash → “this host is broken” → different host → same crash. All three killers survive a reinstall. Read the log once, and you save an evening and possibly a month of hosting fees.

The pack has its own page, and we publish our failures too

The one-click install page for the pack lives at /modpacks/rlcraft — measured RAM floor, first-boot expectations and the crasher mods we strip server-side.

Our benchmark table lists pass/fail per pack with logs one click away — including packs we currently refuse to install (DawnCraft and ATM10: To the Sky were flagged Broken at the time of writing; author-side issues, not host-side). If a pack breaks after we bless it, the flag changes the day our test fails again.

FAQ

How much RAM does an RLCraft server need?+

8 GB is our measured floor (Forge 1.12.2) from the public boot-test table. More helps with 10+ players — 10 GB is the next step up once dragons spawn and players explore far from spawn.

RLCraft server takes forever to start — is that normal?+

Yes, the first boot is the slow one. Give it 10+ minutes once; repeated checkpoints are not a healthy pattern.

Why does my RLCraft server crash after ~90 seconds every time?+

That's killer #3 — read the crash report's "Feature order cycle" line and remove one of the named datapacks.

Does reinstalling fix RLCraft crashes?+

Almost never. All three common killers survive reinstallation: the timers, the JVM args and the datapack cycle are host/config-level, not install-level.

What's the fastest way to debug a crash without reinstalling?+

Read the log once. Either paste it into our free public tool at /tools/crash-doctor or match the last 50 lines of logs/latest.log against the three killers above — the log names the culprit.

Getting a clean RLCraft server tonight

Short version: 8 GB floor, a patient boot check, JVM args already set, and no mystery datapacks. That's what our RLCraft hosting ships by default — 25 free player slots, 7-day refund, EU + US regions.
