Minecraft Server Seed Explained — and How to Change It

The seed is the single number that deterministically generates every chunk's terrain, structures and biomes — and changing it never touches an already-generated world.

Starting a modpack world instead? Same rules apply — see the Modern Skyblock 3 pack page.

What a seed actually determines

The seed is the single number that deterministically generates every chunk's terrain, structures, biomes and ore distribution. The exact same seed on the exact same Minecraft version produces an identical world every time — which is also why a seed copied from an older or newer version can generate differently as terrain generation code changes between versions.

Finding the seed of a world you already have

  • In-game: run /seed (requires op or cheats enabled).
  • From files: the seed is stored in level.dat inside the world save, readable with an NBT viewer if you don't have console or op access.

Changing the seed — there's no in-place option

level-seed in server.properties only takes effect when generating a brand-new world — it does nothing to an already-generated world. To actually change seeds, create a fresh world folder (or delete/rename the existing one) and let the server regenerate on next boot with the new level-seed value set.

Always back up the old world folder before deleting it — there's no undo once regeneration starts.

FAQ

Does changing level-seed affect my current world?+

No. It only applies to newly generated chunks in a brand-new world — your existing terrain stays exactly as it is.

Will the same seed produce the same world on every Minecraft version?+

No — terrain generation algorithms change between major versions, so an identical seed can produce different, though internally consistent, terrain on an older version vs a newer one.

Can I find a seed without op access?+

Yes, by reading level.dat with an NBT editor or viewer — the seed value is stored in plain form inside the save file.
