Minecraft Plugins vs Mods — What's the Real Difference?

Plugins run server-side only and need zero client install. Mods usually require every connecting player to match the exact same mod and version. Picking the right one up front saves a painful migration later.

Already decided on mods over plugins? See the Monifactory pack page.

Plugins: server-side only

  • Run on Paper, Spigot, or Bukkit server software.
  • Install as a .jar in the plugins/ folder — nothing for players to download.
  • Can only do what the server software's API exposes — no new blocks, items, or textures by default.
  • Examples: EssentialsX, LuckPerms, WorldGuard.

Mods: usually both sides

  • Run on Forge, NeoForge, or Fabric.
  • Most mods require every connecting player to install the identical mod, and often identical version, client-side, or they can't join at all.
  • Can add genuinely new content — blocks, entities, dimensions, rendering — because they hook directly into the game's code, not just an API surface.
  • Examples: Create, JEI, most modpacks installed from CurseForge or Modrinth.

The exception: hybrid servers

Software like Mohist or Arclight runs Forge mods and Bukkit plugins on the same server — useful for a modded survival server that also wants EssentialsX-style utility plugins. It's less stable than running either ecosystem alone and lags behind mainline Forge/Paper updates, so treat it as a niche option, not a default.

FAQ

Can I install a plugin on a modded (Forge) server?+

Not directly — Forge doesn't run Bukkit/Spigot plugins. You'd need a hybrid platform like Mohist, with the stability tradeoffs that come with it.

Do players need to install plugins client-side?+

No, plugins are entirely server-side — this is the main practical reason plugin-based survival servers are easier to grow than modded ones.

Which should I choose for a new server?+

Plugins (Paper) if you want vanilla-plus features with zero client setup. Mods if you specifically want new content a modpack delivers — accept that every player needs the same mod list installed.

Hosting handles the install either way

CoalHost installs Paper plugins or full CurseForge/Modrinth modpacks the same way — pick from the panel, no manual jar-dropping.
