Minecraft Server Datapacks Guide — Install and Manage Them
A datapack only changes data-driven content — loot tables, recipes, world generation, advancements — never code, which is why a vanilla server can run one with zero client installation.
Datapacks vs mods — the actual difference
A datapack only changes data-driven content. It never adds new code, textures, or client-side content, which is why vanilla survival servers can run them with zero client installation.
Mods — Forge, NeoForge, Fabric — can do anything, including adding new blocks, entities, and client-rendered content, but usually require every connecting player to install the same mod.
Installing a datapack
- Drop the .zip (or unzipped folder) into world/datapacks/ — not the server root.
- Run /reload in-game, or restart the server for a clean load.
- Run /datapack list to confirm it loaded and check for red error text in the console on load.
The version-mismatch trap
Datapacks target a specific 'pack format' number tied to a Minecraft version range. A datapack built for an older version loaded on a newer server may load with warnings, partially break, or silently skip features depending on what changed — always check the datapack's listed pack format against your server version before installing.
FAQ
Do players need to download anything for a datapack to work?+
No — datapacks are entirely server-side. Players just need to be on a compatible game version to connect.
Can I run multiple datapacks at once?+
Yes, but watch for datapacks that edit the same loot table, recipe, or advancement — the last one loaded (alphabetical by folder name) wins the conflict, which can silently override intended behavior.
Why isn't my datapack working after /reload?+
Check the console for a pack-format warning first — that's the most common cause. Also confirm the folder structure is world/datapacks/<name>/pack.mcmeta, not nested one level too deep.
Drop in datapacks without touching the file system over SSH
CoalHost's file manager uploads straight into world/datapacks/ — no FTP client needed.
