Minecraft 'Connection Timed Out' — How to Fix It

'Connection timed out' and 'connection refused' mean different things, and knowing which one you're looking at narrows down the cause fast.

Troubleshooting a modpack server instead? Same fix applies — see the SkyFactory 4 pack page.

Timed out vs refused — these mean different things

'Connection timed out' means your client sent packets and got no response at all — the server never answered. 'Connection refused' means something did answer and actively rejected the connection, usually right IP but wrong port, or nothing listening there. Timeouts point further upstream — network, firewall, routing — while refused points at the server process itself.

Check these in order

  • Is the server actually running and fully booted? A server mid-boot won't accept connections yet — check the console for 'Done' before testing.
  • Port forwarding: is port 25565 (or your custom port) forwarded to the right internal IP on your router, if self-hosting from home?
  • Firewall: does your OS firewall (ufw, Windows Defender) or cloud provider's security group allow inbound on the game port?
  • Is the player using the right address? A hostname that hasn't propagated yet, or a typo'd IP, will time out exactly like this.
  • CGNAT: some ISPs put home connections behind Carrier-Grade NAT, making port forwarding impossible from your end — this is unfixable without a VPN tunnel or a real hosting provider.
Managed hosting sidesteps the port-forwarding and CGNAT issues entirely — the server has a real public IP from the start.

FAQ

Why does my server work for me but time out for friends?+

Classic port-forwarding symptom — your own connection works over the LAN/loopback path, bypassing the router rule that's missing or wrong for external traffic.

Can a firewall cause a 'connection refused' instead of 'timed out'?+

Usually the opposite: a firewall that silently drops packets causes a timeout. A firewall that actively rejects, or a service that isn't running at all, tends to cause 'refused'.

Is CGNAT fixable?+

Not from your side alone — contact your ISP for a static/public IP add-on, use a tunneling service, or move the server off a home connection entirely.

Skip the router altogether

CoalHost servers run on a real public IP with the game port open from the moment it boots — no forwarding, no CGNAT.
