Forge vs NeoForge for Your Minecraft Server — Which Should You Pick?
This isn't really a choice you make up front — it's a question of which loader your modpack was already built on. Here's the actual difference between the two, and how the 2023 split still shapes which one you need today.
The short version
Modpack targets 1.20.1 or earlier: it needs Forge. NeoForge doesn't exist for these versions.
Modpack targets 1.20.2 or later: check its page — most new packs are NeoForge now, but plenty of Forge-built packs on current versions still exist.
They are not interchangeable — installing the wrong loader for a pack's mod files will fail to load, not just run poorly.
Forge
Independent (oldest Java mod loader, since Minecraft Beta)· LGPL
The original. Still has the biggest back-catalog of mods.
Pros
Largest total mod catalog — every classic modpack era (1.7.10, 1.12.2, 1.16.5) is Forge-only
Still gets new mods for older, extremely popular versions
Most third-party launchers and modpack platforms default to it for legacy packs
Huge amount of existing documentation and Stack Overflow / forum answers
Cons
Slower core-engine updates — big internal API changes ship less often
Older codebase carries more legacy cruft that occasionally causes odd mod conflicts
Some newer mods (2024+) skip Forge entirely and target NeoForge first
Use it for
Any modpack built for 1.20.1 or earlier that explicitly says "Forge" — don't try to substitute NeoForge for these, they are not interchangeable at the mod-file level for older versions.
NeoForge
Forked from Forge in late 2023 after a licensing/governance dispute· LGPL
Forge's community-run fork, built for 1.20.2+. Where new mod development is heading.
Pros
Faster, more transparent updates — the fork exists specifically because Forge's update cadence frustrated modders
Cleaner internal APIs — easier for mod authors to maintain compatibility
Most actively-developed new mods for 1.20.2+ target NeoForge first or exclusively
Compatible side-by-side with a growing number of mods via the Sinytra Connector for Fabric mods
Cons
No 1.20.1-or-earlier support — it only exists for newer versions, so it's not a choice for classic packs
Smaller total mod count than Forge simply because it's younger
A handful of very old, unmaintained Forge mods have never been ported and never will be
Use it for
Any modpack built for 1.20.2 or later that says "NeoForge." This is now the default recommendation for new modpacks targeting current Minecraft versions.
How to check which one you actually need
On CurseForge or Modrinth, every modpack's page lists its mod loader and Minecraft version right in the overview sidebar. If you've already downloaded the pack, the loader shows up in the folder structure: a forge-<version>.jar or neoforge-<version>.jar file sitting next to the Minecraft server jar names it directly.
Two concrete examples of the split: RLCraft targets 1.12.2 and is Forge-only, while All the Mods 10 targets 1.21.1 and is built on NeoForge. On a panel that auto-installs modpacks from CurseForge/Modrinth, this is handled for you — the installer reads the pack's manifest and provisions the correct loader version before the server ever boots.
FAQ
Can I run a Forge modpack on a NeoForge server, or vice versa?+
No — they are not drop-in compatible with each other, even though NeoForge started as a Forge fork. Mods compiled against Forge's API will not load on NeoForge and vice versa. A modpack built for one loader needs that exact loader; check the modpack's page (CurseForge/Modrinth both list the required loader explicitly) before installing.
Why did NeoForge exist if Forge already worked?+
In late 2023, disagreements over Forge's governance and update process led a large part of the modding community (including several of Forge's own long-time maintainers) to fork the project into NeoForge. The split happened at the 1.20.1/1.20.2 boundary — Forge kept developing older versions, NeoForge took over as the primary target for new mod development going forward.
Which loader has more mods — Forge or NeoForge?+
Forge has more mods in total, because it's older and covers every legacy Minecraft version back to Beta. But for current versions (1.20.2+), new mod development is increasingly NeoForge-first — many popular mod authors publish NeoForge builds before or instead of Forge builds for new versions.
Do I need to pick Forge or NeoForge myself, or does the modpack decide?+
The modpack decides — you're not choosing a loader in isolation, you're matching whatever loader the specific modpack was built on. Every modpack listing on CurseForge and Modrinth states its required loader and Minecraft version. A hosting panel that auto-installs modpacks (CoalHost included) reads this from the pack metadata and sets up the correct loader automatically.
Is NeoForge faster than Forge?+
Not dramatically for raw server tick performance — both load vanilla Minecraft and run mod code the same way under the hood. The practical speed difference server owners notice is in how quickly each loader ships compatibility updates after a new Minecraft version, where NeoForge has generally been faster since the 2023 split.
The right loader, picked automatically
CoalHost installs Forge, NeoForge, Fabric or Paper directly from the modpack you choose — no manual loader matching. From €10.69/month.
