How to Host an FTB Skies Server in 2026

FTB Skies is a skyblock modpack with tech progression — you start on a void island and expand outward through automation quests. It's well-suited for dedicated servers because the compact island format keeps chunk loading predictable.

1

Choose your RAM — 6 GB is the comfortable starting point

FTB Skies is generally lighter on RAM than exploration packs because fewer chunks are actively loaded in a skyblock world. 6 GB handles most groups well; go to 8 GB if you have a larger group or expect heavy late-game automation.

2

Download from CurseForge or the FTB App

Search "FTB Skies" on CurseForge or the FTB App and download the server pack — not the client modpack. The server pack includes the correct NeoForge version for Minecraft 1.20.1. Extract it to your server directory.

3

Run the NeoForge installer with Java 17

Run the NeoForge installer jar included in the server pack: `java -jar neoforge-installer.jar --installServer`. FTB Skies is on Minecraft 1.20.1, which requires Java 17 — do not use Java 8 or Java 21.

4

Accept EULA and configure server.properties

Set `eula=true` in eula.txt. FTB Skies runs well on default server.properties — no special configuration is needed beyond setting your port and max-players. The skyblock world generation handles itself.

5

First boot and connecting players

First boot takes 2–4 minutes. Players start on a fresh void island. Share the server IP on port 25565. All players need the same FTB Skies version from CurseForge or the FTB App.

FAQ

Why does a skyblock pack need less RAM?+
In a skyblock world, players are concentrated on a compact island rather than exploring a large open world. Fewer chunks are loaded at any time, which reduces the amount of world state the server keeps in memory.
Which Java version does FTB Skies need?+
Java 17. FTB Skies runs on Minecraft 1.20.1 with NeoForge, which requires Java 17. Do not use Java 8 (too old) or Java 21 (may have compatibility issues with some mods).
Does each player get their own island?+
By default, FTB Skies uses a shared island for all players on the server. Some server configurations support per-player islands depending on the quest and island plugin setup, but this requires additional configuration.
How much RAM does an FTB Skies server need?+
6 GB is the recommended starting point. It handles most groups through normal play. Scale up to 8 GB for heavier automation in mid-to-late game.
Can you add extra mods to FTB Skies?+
Server-side only mods (such as performance mods) are fine to add without requiring clients to update. Any mod that adds client-side content requires all players to install it as well.
