How Much RAM Does a Valheim Server Need?
Valheim needs more RAM than people expect — especially once Mistlands and Ashlands are active. 6 GB is the realistic starting point for a stable dedicated server.
4 GB
2–3 players, early biomes only
Starts but barely. Fine for very early game with 2–3 players before Mistlands.
6 GB
2–8 players, all biomes
Recommended starting point. Covers vanilla Valheim through all biomes for a small crew.
8 GB
6–16 players, mods active
Safe for modded Valheim (BepInEx, ValheimPlus, Valheim Legends) and mid-size groups.
12 GB
15–30 players, heavy mods
Comfortable for larger communities with heavy mod lists and long-running worlds.
FAQ
Does Valheim need more RAM in later biomes?+
Yes. Mistlands and Ashlands in particular generate complex terrain and keep more entities in memory. A 4 GB server that ran fine through Meadows will struggle in late-game biomes.
How much RAM does ValheimPlus add?+
ValheimPlus itself adds minimal overhead. However, it enables features like extended draw distance and higher item stack counts that can increase memory usage over time.
Does crossplay affect server RAM?+
Crossplay is handled at the networking layer and doesn't significantly affect RAM. Player count has more impact than platform.
Why does Valheim need more RAM than people expect?+
Because the full dedicated server loads a lot more than it appears — terrain generation, entity simulation and the Valheim world state all sit in memory simultaneously across a large map.
