How Much RAM Does a Terraria Server Need?

Vanilla Terraria is light — 2–4 GB works fine. tModLoader with Calamity and Thorium is a different story: 6–8 GB is where you stop fighting the server.

2 GB

Vanilla only, 2–8 players

Fine for vanilla Terraria with a small group.

4 GB

Vanilla or light tModLoader

Comfortable vanilla, or tModLoader with a small mod list.

6 GB

tModLoader + major content mods, 4–12 players

Recommended for Calamity, Thorium, or any larger content mod.

8 GB

Calamity + Thorium + other mods, 10–20 players

Plenty of headroom for heavy mod stacks and larger player counts.

FAQ

How much RAM does vanilla Terraria need?+
2–4 GB is sufficient for most vanilla Terraria servers. The game is very lightweight without mods.
How much RAM does tModLoader need?+
4–6 GB depending on your mod list. Calamity alone pushes to 6 GB for comfortable multiplayer. Calamity + Thorium together is better on 8 GB.
Does Calamity use more RAM than Thorium?+
Calamity is generally heavier due to its large number of enemies, projectiles and boss fights. Thorium adds significant content but is slightly lighter than full Calamity.
Do players need the same amount of RAM as the server?+
No — client RAM is different from server RAM. The server needs RAM for the simulation. Clients need RAM for rendering, which is usually more than the server needs.
