How Much RAM Does a Project Zomboid Server Need?
The short answer: 6 GB for a small group, 8 GB if you want comfortable headroom. Project Zomboid simulates the entire map continuously — that is fundamentally different from most games and it is why the RAM requirements are higher than people expect.
4 GB
1 (solo only)
Technically boots, but too low for any real multiplayer. Crashes under load.
6 GB
2–8 players
The realistic minimum for a small group. Stable with moderate Workshop mods.
8 GB
8–16 players
Recommended starting point. Comfortable headroom for mods and longer sessions.
12 GB
16–32 players
Better for community servers and heavy Workshop mod lists.
FAQ
Can a Project Zomboid server run on 4 GB?+
It will start, but it will crash under any meaningful multiplayer load. 4 GB is not a realistic plan for a multiplayer server.
Why does PZ need so much RAM?+
Because it simulates the entire map — zombie AI, loot spawns, weather, meta events and player state — all at once, server-side. It is not streaming chunks like Minecraft; the full simulation runs continuously.
Does adding Steam Workshop mods increase RAM usage?+
Yes. Each mod adds to the simulation overhead. A heavy Workshop list (20+ mods) can push a 6 GB server to its limit. Budget an extra 1–2 GB for a large mod collection.
Does the map size affect RAM?+
The default Muldraugh map is always loaded in full. Custom maps or expanded city mods add to the footprint. For modded maps, add at least 2 GB beyond the base recommendation.
