Best Project Zomboid Server Hosting 2026
Project Zomboid's Build 42 raised the bar for dedicated server requirements. Wrong branch, wrong RAM or a US datacenter will ruin what should be a tense co-op experience. Here is what actually matters.
What to look for in a Project Zomboid host
Build 42 support
Build 42 is the current branch and what most players are on. Make sure your host runs the `unstable` branch for Build 42 or has an explicit option to select it — some hosts default to the stable Build 41 branch.
RAM for long-running worlds
Project Zomboid worlds grow in memory as players explore and build. A server that was fine on day 1 can feel sluggish after a month of play. 6 GB is the safe starting point for Build 42; add more if you plan a long campaign.
Europe availability
PZ is a tense co-op horror game where server lag breaks immersion. EU datacenters in Helsinki or Frankfurt give European players under 20 ms ping. A US server adds 80–120 ms — noticeable during zombie hordes.
Workshop mod support
Project Zomboid has thousands of Steam Workshop mods. A host that lets you configure mod IDs from the panel — without manually editing server files — makes adding and updating mods significantly easier.
Automated backups
A corrupted world file can end a months-long campaign instantly. Daily automated backups with one-click restore are essential for any serious PZ server.
RAM by player count
| Players | RAM | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2–8 | 6 GB | Build 42, recommended minimum |
| 9–16 | 8 GB | Active world, mod list |
| 17–32 | 12 GB | Large community server |
CoalHost for Project Zomboid
CoalHost runs Project Zomboid on Build 42 with AMD EPYC hardware in Helsinki. Workshop mod support, daily backups and auto-restart on crash. Plans from €12/month.

How much RAM does a Project Zomboid server need?↓
4 GB handles a small group of 2–8 players on a fresh map. Increase to 6–8 GB for larger groups or long-running servers where the world state grows. Build 42 has higher RAM requirements than Build 41 — 6 GB is the recommended starting point.
Does Project Zomboid support mods on dedicated servers?↓
Yes. Workshop mods from Steam are supported. Configure mod IDs in the server settings file and all connecting clients must have the same mods subscribed.
What is the difference between Build 41 and Build 42?↓
Build 42 (released late 2024) adds NPC survivors, underground areas, expanded crafting and a new animation system. It has higher server requirements than Build 41. Most active multiplayer communities have moved to Build 42.
How many players can join a Project Zomboid server?↓
The default cap is 32 players but can be adjusted in server settings. Most communities run 8–24 for a good experience. Very high player counts increase server CPU load significantly.
Can I keep my existing world when moving to a managed host?↓
Yes. Upload your world folder via SFTP or the file manager and point the server config at it. Your character saves, base and loot all carry over.
